Entry Eleven: "Myth"


I chose this GNC advertisement as an example of myth in advertisement. The denotation of this example is a muted black and white woman. The connotation is that a woman who uses GNC live well products will live a proud life.

The myth is that a product can promote pride; and a better lifestyle. The bold portrait of this woman is paired with two messages. Her facial is supposed to translate or compliment the two messages, but it doesn't. I was very interested in this advertisement because the overall idea and concept was wrong to me. The woman in the ad doesn't look proud, she doesn't look well either. In result, I felt this was a perfect example for this entry because the whole idea that GNC is trying to communicate is imaginary and fictitious.
